Paint existing cement?

We would like to paint or stain our existing concrete sidewalk. what steps can we do, as do it ourselves' home owners. What company makes the best product for our job.Our concrete is in good shape.we want to spruce our walkway with color.Paint existing cement?
We've done this twice. The first time we didn't take the time to power wash the walkway and it only lasted 4 years. The second time we removed all the dirt with high pressure spray and then used the Valspar non-skid cement paint. It's looks really nice and is wearing much better than the first time. We bought the paint at Lowes.Paint existing cement?
I painted our porch foundation and front steps with paint made specifically for cement. I used Home Depot's brand, but I can't remember the name (it's different for the cement paint than for the house paint). It has lasted for 7 years now after following their instructions for cleaning and prep. I have to warn you though, it gets really slick when it's wet.
