Painted basement paneling light blue color-- cement floor needs to be covered--?

Ok not good at decorating-- too left brained for that:) painted paneling in basement a light blue color -- looks good-- we recently ripped up old carpet in basement and I am thinking cheapest way is to paint the cement-- (not enough money to buy tiles or more carpet at present) -- is there a paint and color that anyone would recommend for concrete and to match the light blue walls-- as much as I hate to admit it -- its sort of a Carolina Tarheel Blue-- Is there a certain type of paint for concrete?? PLEASE HELP--Painted basement paneling light blue color-- cement floor needs to be covered--?
possibly a light grey

im not sure about colours

but im a painter, and i know that for sure you have to buy proper cement floor paint. or your floor will end up peeling (looks alot worse then not painted cement)Painted basement paneling light blue color-- cement floor needs to be covered--?
Whatever store you go to will help you pick the right product to use. I'm sure it will say concrete paint on the can.

Anyway, light beige, light brown (like a sandy brown) or even a sandalwood, which has a little bit of a pink tone, should all look good. Just get a soft neutral color that doesn't clash, the blue is your theme color for the room and you don't need anything exciting on the floor.

A contractor washed cement plaster off an enamel painted, metal roof with HCL.?

Roof has a 45 deg pitch. he then washed down the roof. from the next day we then had three days of rain. The owner says the roof must be replaced. She says that the more you add water to HCL, the more corrosive it becomes. I understand that a roof isn't a container and that adding water must (1) dilute it and (2) remove it. can someone please offer some solid scientific answer that may help here. this poor guy needs the factsA contractor washed cement plaster off an enamel painted, metal roof with HCL.?
HCl is soluble in water. Adding water to a HCl solution dilutes the acid. Add enough water and the HCl solution approaches the acidity of rain water. The HCl has been completely washed away by 3 days of rain. There certainly won't be any HCl solution left on the roof. The HCl was probably washed away by the contractor when he rinsed off the roof after cleaning it.

The owner is confused about HCl. The gas, HCl, ionizes in water and is corrosive. Exposing the roof to concentrated HCl solution is more corrosive than exposing a dry rood to HCl gas. However, the more water you add to a HCl solution, the weaker (and less corrosive) it becomes.

  • How to remove dried egg and shells from painted wood, steel garage door, cement?

A power washer might be your best bet.How to remove dried egg and shells from painted wood, steel garage door, cement?
The dried egg can be removed by first soaking the area with normal room temperature water. This will loosen the layers of egg and shell. Next step is to mop the area using soft fabric or sponge. Try not to rub it hard to peal the egg. This needs to be repeated in several rounds depending on how thick the layer of egg is. You can use very mild detergent but avoid if you are concerned about the paint color change. I wouldn't use hot water especially on painted surfaces. It might be ok to use warm water or detergent on cement. Again depends on where the cement is. If it is the driveway, its perfectly ok to use warm water and mild detergent.

Power wash is ok if the egg is on the siding / brick / cement or asphalt driveway or garage door. Even with power wash I would recommend mild soaking round of wash first and then follow up with a little stronger stream. How to remove dried egg and shells from painted wood, steel garage door, cement?
I would try a bucket of hot soapy water, a sponge and or scrub brush! If i had a power washer available I'd use that.
Take a flat head screwdriver and get to work.

Can you put hydraulic cement over a painted cracking cement wall?

the house is from 1959. Before I bought it the owners re-landscaped without any consideration for water flow thus causing the basement to have seepage through the walls. I fixed the water flow issue (1.5 years dry) but now I have painted cement walls that have paint pushed out/peeling with a few visible cracks and wonderful mineral deposition. I really don't want to spend the time with the metal wire brush to strip the paint off so I would like to just use hydraulic cement over the whole wall and then use a water sealing paint over the top. Is this a good idea? other suggestions? Can you put hydraulic cement over a painted cracking cement wall?
That sounds more time consuming than just scraping off the peeling paint.....

Here's 1 problem w/your approach, latex paint dries so fast that it actually creates a vacuum effect in doing so, which means that as it dries it'll pull off the surface anything that's not firmly attached, which is why prep work's so important to longevity. You won't immediately notice this happening, but w/the passage of time you'll be back to the peeling wall in spades.

I've never heard of skim-coating w/hydraulic cement, but I've done plenty of patching plaster walls w/plaster of paris, %26amp; what immediately comes to mind are the inherent problems w/working in a medium that sets up so quickly, I can't imagine how you'd get a whole wall covered %26amp; looking even satisfactory (but I'm pretty picky, I figure when people are paying me I'm obliged to do a better job than they could've) w/out going insane in the process.

I learned the trick to plaster, but I don't know the chemistry of hydraulic cement well enough to find a retardant for it.

Anyways, I know prep-work sucks, but often it's just easiest to do it %26amp; get it over with (start w/a stiff putty knife, by the way) rather than inventing a new process %26amp; having to deal w/a long string of learning curves as you go.

The first question that came to mind w/your question is have you ever skim-coated anything before so that you'd have even a vague idea of what you're getting yourself into potentially, but if you must create, than by all means go forth!

It sounds to me like you are stuck in a serious quagmire. To remove it chemically, will contaminate or seriously damage the walls of the tank. A sand blaster will remove the paint but it will also cause damage to the surface of the tank walls. A high pressure wash may also be an alternative. We have rust colored deposits growing on painted white cement block basement walls..anyone know what this is?

it forms little tiny balls the size of be-be's and form miny clustersWe have rust colored deposits growing on painted white cement block basement walls..anyone know what this is?
It has to be seepage coming from your water system. I'm guessing it's on the inside of the the basement wall, not the outside.

Do you have a sprinkler system to water your lawn? Even treated city water can make rust stains on light-colored surfaces. If your lawn slopes toward your house instead of away from it, the water can seep into your basement through the blocks if they weren't properly backplastered. Easiest way to fix this would be to add some topsoil to your yard where it's low around the house so the water drains away from the house.

If you don't have sprinklers or low spots, is the problem near where your water enters your house? There may be a leaky water main out there. If that might be the case, call your city water department and have them check it out. They won't pay for cleaning up your basement, but they might be able to stop it from getting any worse. We have rust colored deposits growing on painted white cement block basement walls..anyone know what this is?
Could be mold from dampness. If you don't already have a dehumidifier I suggest you get one. Get one to handle the square footage.

Also check the hair line cracks in the wall. Another thing you can do, is make sure the water/rain is diverted away from the house foundation.

You can extend your rain cutters by using black hosing that goes around the down spouts.

They'll know what you need at any of the home improvement stores.

You're going to have to wash the wall down with bleach to get rid of the mold.
Metal ties are sometimes used to hold the blocks together or to the outside wall. These sound as if they are now wet and rusting do try to look at one area to identify if I am correct.I am not sur of the remedy and if this were the case the advice of a builder of structural engineer maybe a way foreword.

Is it a bad idea to use a composite hockey stick on painted cement?

So, I have a CCM Vector 6 composite stick, and I want to use it in my garage. Its cement, but its painted with glossy paint, so its pretty smooth (and awesome to practice shooting on). But my last stick (a wooden one) got beat up pretty bad and started falling apart at the bottom, but I used this stick on gravel as well.

I plan on using it with friction tape and maybe even a strip of duct tape on the bottom.

I was just wondering if anyone knows whether this is a bad idea or not? thanksIs it a bad idea to use a composite hockey stick on painted cement?
If replacing sticks more often than usual doesn't matter to you go ahead it's your coin.

Personally though on my budget I make sure to use an ABS blade when playing roller or ball hockey because it has the playability of fibreglass but will eventually wear down as opposed to delaminate and crack (like wood) or snap (like carbonfibre)Is it a bad idea to use a composite hockey stick on painted cement?
Iike HabsFan said, the ABS blade will suit you best. I myself have a tried wood and composites of top and low quality on the cement and they do the same thing, they break rapidly. However, if you must use your one piece out side, dont put the friction tape on the bottom, its not worth it because then you cant shoot the puck. duct tape only lasts for so long. Just get yourself a cheap shaft with ABS blade, or a wood stick with ABS blade.
only do it if you really don't care about the stick. if you still intend to use it on the ice, then i think it's a bad idea. just go buy a cheap wooden stick or something. plus it'll be heavier which is good to train with.
If you don't like money, send it my way.

I recently painted a cement floor inside my house. 2 coats of latex then a thin layer of sealer. the floor is?

still sticky and it seems to be sweating. does anyone have advice on what to do now. the sealer was put on 2 days ago. helpI recently painted a cement floor inside my house. 2 coats of latex then a thin layer of sealer. the floor is?
You may have to strip it off and redo it with concrete floor paint. That paint is specially formulated to handle the traffic of walking and dragging things across it.

To try to salvage what you have, you need to understand what is causing the problem. Without seeing it, it sounds like the concrete may have had moisture in it from below when it was first painted. Either that, or you didn't allow each layer to dry thoroughly before applying the next coat.

Your best bet at this point is to try to lower the moisture level in your basement. Borrow, rent, or buy a dehumidifier and run it in the basement. Remember, if the ventilation isn't great down there, you just dumped a couple gallons of moisture on the floor and it has no where to evaporate.

You may also need to run it periodically in the future if you continue to get condensation. If you decide to paint the walls, for best results, use a basement wall paint. It is designed to soak into the concrete, make it waterproof, and has a fungicide to prevent mold and mildew.

    Ideas on painting cement block?

Half of the walls in the house we are remodeling are made of cement block. I've never painted walls like that before? I do know it soaks up the paint... so I need some suggestions on making it last and not peel off? Also, if you could give me some ideas for the floor also.... It's made out of cement and we can't really afford hardwood through the entire house.Ideas on painting cement block?
First use a cement sealing product like Dry-Lock. Then put on some paint sealer (i.e. Bulls-Eye), then paint.

The cement floor is a little trickier. You can get cement stains which is better than trying to paint it. They do make an epoxy cement paint used in garages, but the preparation of the cement prior to applying the paint makes it a lot of work. Stick with a cement stain.Ideas on painting cement block?
For your walls, first use one or two coats of a good quality primer followed by one or two finish coats. The best paint for the floor is an Epoxy paint. Your home store can recommend something for your specific conditions.

  • What is the best epoxy paint to apply to a cement floor(old &pourous) and with what additive to make it less s

high quality paint is not what causes a painted floor to last.....but like any painting projects its all in the preparation.

if the floor isn't cleaned and free of all wax and grease products 100% then no paint, no matter how good will last.

the concrete floors you see painted that last and last were done when the concrete was fresh...prior to car tires, people, etc.

car tires, oil, gas fumes, even grease sitting in a can on the shelf will give off a air borne silicon that will adhere to the floor. this silicon is what prevents paints from sticking. this can be proven by strictly opening a can of tire shine in a body shop and watch how fast just opening the bottle will contaminate the entire shop from head to toe. What is the best epoxy paint to apply to a cement floor(old %26amp;pourous) and with what additive to make it less s
Again its like someone already said its in the preparation of the floor prior to painting with epoxy. I would recommend having the floor shot blasted with little metal balls. Install stone back splash directly on painted wall or install plywood/cement board base first?

I'm installing a stone back splash behind my bathroom sink - 16 SF. The wall is currently painted and I want to make sure that the stone and thinset adhere properly. Should I sand the wall with 80 grit sandpaper and apply the thinset/stone or should I put 1/2'; or 1/4'; plywood down for better adhesion? Perhaps cement board?Install stone back splash directly on painted wall or install plywood/cement board base first?
Ideal way is to do a cement board as a backer board but since its in a non wet area,( not exposed to direct water) you really don t have to.Roughing the area up is always a good idea and won t hurt a thing. I d never do a wood backer in a moist and humid environment, It can expand from moisture and break the bond.

I cleaned my cement with a cleaner, degreaser, then painted it, colors are flat. What can I do to add depth?

I used Thompson's Watersealer concrete care cleaner and degreaser solvent. I painted made a mosaic pattern with color stain (, but the colors seem to bright. Could I use a hue, semi-transparent stain, gloss paint to darken the overall appearance? The pattern has colors of red, baby blue, terracotta and cream. Outlined with the cream color. What I am afraid of is that it might get too dark, and the terracotta color, and the outline match my house. This was my first time working with cement, and the brown color I picked looks red, and the silver colors looks baby blue. The colors changed when I painted it, but I went ahead and painted it the colors I picked hoping that within time the colors would change from the weather. HELP what should I do?I cleaned my cement with a cleaner, degreaser, then painted it, colors are flat. What can I do to add depth?
First, I take it this was done outside, since you mentioned the weather. Second, did you seal the concrete first? If not, try about a gallon of sealer, with the smallest can, (1/2pint, I think) of a deep chocolate, not black, mixed in. Then seal over what you have painted and see if the colors aren't a bit more toned down. Sounds like a beautiful job anyway, my hat's off to you. Good luckI cleaned my cement with a cleaner, degreaser, then painted it, colors are flat. What can I do to add depth?
OOOps! I thought you were doing the concrete floor inside.

    Why not sponge a lighter color or shade onto each of the colors? Either leave the ';sponge'; look or sponge and wipe of some of the color, leaving a bit for ';texture.';

I saw some concrete guys who were painting a kitchen floor andwhile the paint was wet on the boarder, they sprinkled Fritos (yup the chips) on the paint. Once the paint dried and the chips were picked up, it left a really cool effect in the paint. I can't wait to try it out in my home!
What if you added a little black to the brown to down play the red? You're braver than I am to try such an enormous project out but it sounds really cute. I love mosaic anything!
You could try a very small amount of a med brown mixed into a wax. You have to rub the wax on and buff it more than once to get the colors to look great. I don't know what kind of wax my sister used on her cement floor but it looked like a beautiful green marble with veins of beige when she finished. She did her whole downstairs in it. It hasn't shown any wear for about 7 years now and she just has to damp mop to keep it nice! Check with the paint supply for the wax you need. Have fun.

I have patched some holes in an indoor wall with cement. How long do I need to wait to dry before painting?

Is 2 days long enough for the cement to be dry enough?I have patched some holes in an indoor wall with cement. How long do I need to wait to dry before painting?
It really depends on the weather where you are..

With that said 2 days is good but I would wait a week on that thicker one. You dont want it cracking after you put plaster over it.I have patched some holes in an indoor wall with cement. How long do I need to wait to dry before painting?
It takes 28 days for cement to cure! But however if it looks wet don't paint! However 2 days seems plenty of time but dont forget to prime it !
You can kind of tell by looking at it. It will look darker, like it's damp, in spots until it's fully cured. I would say 2 days is when it would be the earliest you could work on that surface.

Should I primer a cement basement floor before painting it? Is there a certain primer I should use?

No. You want to use the product directly to the substrate. If a product calls for a primer, then it will more than likely be one of their own or included in a kit. The primer step in painting concrete floors is the ';etching'; process. This project definetly requires following the manu's directions.Should I primer a cement basement floor before painting it? Absolutely use a primer. Kilz is the best.

    Hi,

The best product i used on silicone removal is called Contractors De-Sol-Vit a citrus like solvent. Just drench the area %26amp; then use a wire or scrub brush. It may take a few applications since the residue from silicone may have soaked in the surrounding area. when you think it's all removed mist the area lightly %26amp; the water should dissipate %26amp; not repel on the surface. Then you're ready to paint.
Are you in the uk or usa?If uk try this product from Screwfix....

use meuratic acid you can find this at Lowes or home depot. This should take care of your problem. Be cautious when using it though cause its not safe for your skin. Brick layers use it to remove mortar from brick and cement. Read the directions for use.
You'll have to scrape it off, a razor knife will help cut it loose first and scrape the remainder. The caulk is there for a reason so you may want to replace it with a ';paintable'; caulk which is sold at any paint or home center.
Use a propane torch to heat it and just scrape it off.

Hcl eats metal. If there were holes in the enamel the acid when applied would attack the roofing. The damage would be immediate and obvious.

Hcl becomes diluted (weaker) when you add water. If the contractor was careful to rinse well and then you had three days of rain it's hard to imagine any acid residue could have remained or done any damage.

You might buy one piece of roofing and duplicate the cleaning and flushing process to see if it damages the metal. This could provide some insights.

You should request a new place to park, and talk with your HR department. Eventually they should pay for it, and even may have insurance to cover it. Or they may need to make the construction company pay for it.

But don't just file a lawsuit - you will just make enemies. Try to work with them first. And only if you are sure you could find another good job should you go as far as a lawsuit.

Getting off paint on outside cement?

Outside in my back yard the people who lived in the house before I moved in decided to make a nice cement patio...but they used the patio for a basketball hoop playing area. I took down the basketball hoop to make a nice little picnic/grill area.

The main problem is that the people painted it this light blue color. It is chipping off right now and I would rather it just be off and be the plain cement. I tried with a hose and some of it comes off in bigger chips, but most of it is stuck on and if I use something like asitone (sp?) it is probably not good for the grass/environment.

Step3Use a high-power sand blaster. Put silica or dry river sand in the appropriate compartment of the machine and water in the other compartment. Maneuver the machine over the concrete surface. A powerful sand blaster removes fresh spray paint as well as deep old stains.

Step4Apply Methylene Chloride to the concrete with a brush and let the chemical settle into the surface. Spray water with high pressure on the area and scrub with a brush. Other effective solutions include Sodium Hydroxide, Xylene and Methyl-Ethyl-Ketone.

Step5Prevent new stains. Coat the cleaned area with a special sealer, such as Aliphatic Urethane, to stop spray paint from seeping into the concrete surface and prevent discoloration. How do i get spray paint off of cement?
There is some awesome stuff called Oops! You should be able to find it in the paint section of your store. If that doesn't work, the next bet is a power sprayer, and a wire brush.

I have installed cement board ceiling & after painting i found cracks in joints of board. How can i rectify it?

Cement board is used as a sub base for tile. As for joints you would need to fill them, which usally you use mesh tape and thinset and then apply tile, I am not sure what you have done.

Is it near a fence? Why not set up some lattice and then put some vine plants down to grow up and distract from the cement - could plant flowering vines like morning glories or even grapes.

You could also put some chairs out, and maybe a birdbath. All these things would distract from the cement.I am landscaping Dad's yard. Small area of cement 4' x16' looks terrible should I paint or something els
You don't need my opinion...the first two gave you the best of all possible scenarios!!

    I'm impressed....
assuming you're talking about a horizontal slab, why not just cover it with containerized plants and/or planter boxes--large wood boxes on small feet.
find a old garden bench or wicker chair paint it white put out baskets of flowers and you have a nice seating area for the old man
You could get some landscape pavers and use paver adhesive to glue the pavers to the slab. There is no need to use sand because I would bet the slab is already fairly level. I have seen whole driveways done this way and it seems to work.
A 1/2 inch of sand with brick paver's, slate with mortar joints, pea gravel set with mortar, adhesives or polyurethane. Or you could cover it with wooden decking, even up a portion of the wall.. RScott

  • What's the best way to remove water damaged paint from cement block basement walls?

I have two corners of my basement that have seen better days... I'm trying to get the paint off so I can repaint. In case you're wondering, yes I already rerouted the gutters outside to make sure the water doesn't still get in. It's been dry for about 3 years now, but I need to figure out the best approach to removing the damaged paint for repainting. I've tried a palm sander and a scraper, but nothing seems to be easy. I have a feeling this is the best way to get it done, but I thought I would check here to see if anyone had a better idea... Any suggestions? What's the best way to remove water damaged paint from cement block basement walls?
you can scratch the pain off, or put a primer over all the walls before you repaint so that it's all an even coat. You could also just leave it alone, paint over it, and sponge paint the walls so the uneven-ness of the walls from the former paint are not noticed at all. That's what i did in my basement it looks great! you can't even tell that it had seen ';worse days';!!

Why did the green crosswalk paint turn yellow on cemented basement floor?

We painted our floor in the basement a green color, but its the kind of paint they use for crosswalks. A couple days later there were yellow spots all over. Eventually we did a 2nd coat but its still happening. Does anyone know why it would do that? Or is there anything to fix it?Why did the green crosswalk paint turn yellow on cemented basement floor?
There could be something wrong with the paint or the ground. You should try buying a different type of paint maybe the ground had a reaction.

Can a driveway that is cement & chipped up be painted over some how & smoothed out?

I have a double sized driveway %26amp; a side walk that are in bad shape. My husband has used a pressure washed on them %26amp; takes the lawn mower over them with the blade on. In the winter we get snow %26amp; I can hear him scraping it up from the driveway. So this is the kind of damage it has. It there something I can put over top of it all to make it look fresh %26amp; new?Can a driveway that is cement %26amp; chipped up be painted over some how %26amp; smoothed out?
you could probably mix up some thin-set mortar a little on the wet side and fill the rivets or missing chunks with that. you will need to use a spackle knife or putty knife to smooth it out. you also may need to add more mortar after the initial application has had a chance to dry. Make sure you scrape up the excess, or any that drips where you don't want it.Can a driveway that is cement %26amp; chipped up be painted over some how %26amp; smoothed out?
All paint will do is sill the concrete and keep the oil from interring it and hiding the scratches made by the blade. It comes in clir and gray that I know of.Yes you can buy a sealer to do this. You will need to patch the pits and chips first then seal it.I am assuming he is using a riding mower with a snow plow blade on it.It would be best to attach a squidgy or thick rubber to the blade to prevent the scratches.Or he will scatch it up a gen.
You can get great coatings for cement driveways now. Sprayed on under high pressure with a stencil applied to the surface they end up looking like sandstone pavers, cobblestones etc...and they come in a range of clours and qualities.

Just try your local; home and garden supplier and ask to look at some catalogues. Much cheaper than ripping up old cement and laying new...and better for the environment too. They end up looking really good.
What I would do is pave it over with some Portland Cement. That would be your best bet. Then you can smooth it over.
I would use cement coating and paint. Hope it works. Perhaps Home Depot or Loews's have sites that could explain it better Good Luck
Yes. Check at Home Centers for cement coatings that can be applied. Make sure you follow all the prep requirements.

How is muriatic acid applied to cement floors? Before painting. Also how should it be removed if so.?

Steven W gave you some good information but didn't tell you to dilute the acid with water. Also, add the water to the bucket first and then slowly add the percentage of acid. It can form a noxious cloud and is harmful to you and to many elements found in a house. It can cause metals to rust and the acid must be neutralized with water. They make stiff bristle brushes with pole attachments to scrub with and to avoid contact with skin. After you've etched the concrete, then damp mop several times to remove the residue if you can't wash down with a hose. Definitely do not pour it onto the concrete as it is extremely abrasive if not properly diluted as per directions. I had a bottle drip leak one day and it ate a deep hole into the concrete in a few hours. Too much acid will seriously damage your concrete's finish and adversely affect your paint job.How is muriatic acid applied to cement floors? Before painting. Also how should it be removed if so.?
Just wash liberally with plenty of water. Muratic acid fizzles when active like a soda drink, so when it has been overwhelmed with water, it won't be a problem anymore. Dry thoroughly though before priming and painting. Good luck.

How is muriatic acid applied to cement floors? Before painting. Also how should it be removed if so.?
Often used in pools it's a dangerous solution in any case. The gases are noxious, and skin contact isn't advised.

It's basically an etching solution in it's cleaning ability, and you should have a hose or water handy, have eye protection at least, and a way to not stay in the immediate area for extended periods unless you dillute it,,,and don't mix it with anything else but water.

It's sold in plastic containers so you can transfer it to a sprayer, or pour it and spread it with a stiff bristle floor brush.

If you have a way to extract it just by wet mopping that can work. I wouldn't use a wet vac unless you clean it immediately after, and then I never have, so can't state any result. Certainly if it's a garage you can hose it out, though I'm not in favor of adding chemicals to the environment. If it's a basement and you have a floor drain, the hose works too, but it also goes into sewage. It is NOT systemic however.

In any case, Caution in every case.

    Steven Wolf
Muriatic acid refers to a concentrated hydrochloric acid solution. The most common concentration is 34% hydrochloric acid in water.

The acid cleans concrete by reacting with the inorganic concrete matereal.

As stated in earlier answers, you can spread it with a squeegee. But you need to wear chemical resistant boots, or shoes that you are will throw away. You also need to wear chemical goggles.....this acid is not forgiving. If you get it in your eye, it will destroy your cornea before you can wash it out. It will not be fun.

If you get on your hands or chlothes, you need to wash it off the skin immedediately. It will cause a chemical burn on the skin by destroying the skin. If you get it on your chlothes, the material in contact with the acid will turn into a hole eventually if not right away.

And if it isn't immediately obvious...don't smell it or ingest it. It will burn your internals just as fast as it will burn your eyes.
you pour in on the floor and use a squeegee to spread it around then you can just spray it with a hose to remove it then power wash and paint
You might want to go to your local hardware/building supply store and get some T.S.P. Also, a good primer will insure a quality bond.

  • What is the preparation for cement block (indoors) for painting?

The cement block has never been painted before. It is the wall in a basement. What is the preparation for cement block (indoors) for painting?
You should make sure the block is clean, then I'd use a combination sealer/primer first. You want the added benefit of sealing the block (since it's in the basement). Expect the cinder block to soak up the primer. You'll probably need at least two coats. Otherwise, use a sealer first, then follow with a good quality primer.

If you can find a paint marked especially for brick, stone, block, etc . select your color from that group. Otherwise, just check with someone in the store or read the label to ensure the paint you've chosen will be okay to paint on the concrete block. Also, you should try to get a paint that includes a product to retard the growth of mold. If you can't find one that has this characteristic included, you can buy it by the package, and pour it into you paint. It's worth it to take this extra step because basements can be the perfect spot for molds and mildew.

Good luckWhat is the preparation for cement block (indoors) for painting?
As stated, the wall should be clean and completely dry. Use UGL masonry paint for the interior of the walls. This will aid in the prevention of water infiltration. It will not completley stop water in a big event, but it will help when the ground is saturated. Caulk all cracks in the mortar and along the floor. Good luck.
It should be washed and dried thoroughly first. I would also check with your local paint store for the proper type of paint to use, especially if you are painting basement walls

Latex paint cleans up with warm soapy water...

Oil based paint cleans up with mineral spirits or paint thinner...

You are definately going to need to work quickly to prevent permanent damage...if it dries, it will be much harder to remove...especially from the cement (concrete). The door frames could be cleaned with a steel wool pad.
on the cement, remove it with paint thinner.

if the sliding glass door frames are metal , you can use paint thinner on that. but if the surface is painted, you might have to touch it up.

if it's wood, you can knock it off with steel wool or a light sandpaper.
use a product called soy gel, you will find it at any concrete supply company. It apply the product, let it set for about 10 min, and it will melt it off. Works best if you use a power washer with a rotary nozzle sometimes called a turbo nozzle.

Dustin Z if you have any trouble go to my site http://www.kansascityconcrete.net and email me. My guy's take off paint on concrete on a daily bases, so don't stress. For your door I would use either mineral spirits or paint thinner on a cloth. Be care full if it has metal cladding though!

    Cement house and paint?

Where I live houses are made completely out of cement blocks including interior walls. The problem is that there seems to be a lot of moisture in the walls. Many people end up with paint peeling off the wall about 6 inches above the baseboards. If there is a shower, toilet, sink on the other side then the entire area may have paint peeling problem. It isn't about broken pipes just condensation.

Is there some kind of sealer than can be put on the cement blocks first? Should the water pipes be insulated?

Do you know a possible solution?Cement house and paint?
Yes they make a sealer for the block before you paint, but you can also use epoxy paint it seals it also. Yes the pipes should have been insulated . Blocks are porous and they are required by code to seal them from the outside, so you may want to check the outside of the house and try to keep the water from coming in.Cement house and paint?

white (mossy) coming out of the cracks of the cement? Is this Radon? Is this mold? Is it dangerouse? The basement sometimes gets water 1/2'; 1'; deep but I never noticed this before. I've heard of black mold and it is dangerouse but I never saw a white substance coming from the cement wall beforeIm wondering, recently I went down to our unfinished basement and the cement wall we painted now has something
It sounds like the salts and lime in the soil around your house leaching through the cement. We get this on our garage floor in the spring because of the extra moisture in the ground. It is not dangerous. To fix the problem you need to waterproof your exterior basement walls and if you are getting water in your basement , the weeping tiles around the footings probably are broken, or judging by the age of the house nonexistent. Do you have a sump hole? That is where the tile usually drains into and then your sump pump would pump the water away.Im wondering, recently I went down to our unfinished basement and the cement wall we painted now has something
Radon: no. Radon is an invisible gas.

Mold: maybe, but not terrifically likely.

Efflorescence would be my best guess -- salts from the cement and groundwater leaching through the walls.

What Paint should be used to paint a bird bath?made of Cement?

Water-based concrete stains, typically composed of acrylic resins -- while technically not coatings -- behave more like coating products because they do not react chemically with cementitious materials. Instead, these products penetrate deeply into the concrete surface, providing colorization and protection against harmful elements to both vertical and horizontal surfaces.

Water-based acrylics resist fading and abrasion, and they may be applied using stencil designs to create faux brick and geometric effects. Easier to apply than chemically reactive stains, water-based acrylics clean up with soap and water. Another advantage is compliance with even the strictest air quality regulations due to their very low VOC (volatile organic compound) content. What Paint should be used to paint a bird bath?made of Cement?
First of all before you paint your bird bath you should make sure it is clean and dry, secondly the color doesn't really matter it is up to you or when you go buy the paint ask them at the paint store what kind of paint you should use. What is cement based paint and why curing with water is required?

Cement paint is a paint made out of cement with different pigments and it is applied on the external walls of the house. Before applying the paint, the wall cement plaster needs to be saturated with water and the paint is applied on damp surface. The painted surface needs to be cured for 3 to 4 days for proper hydration of cement based materials, which give life to the paints in terms of performance and better aesthetics.

Are cement fumes toxic like paint or gas fumes?

Hi. Are cement fumes toxic like fumes from gasoline or paint? I'm only worried about neurotoxicity...Are cement fumes toxic like paint or gas fumes?
Before water is added, cement can be a throat irritant if you breath the dust, but will do no permanent harm. If you have special reason for this concern, ask the concrete company for what is called the MSDS sheet. They have to provide this to you.Are cement fumes toxic like paint or gas fumes?
no they are not at least no one has discovered that they are . the fine dust that goes around when making concrete is not good for the lungs but once mixed there is not any dust so no worries there.
No but when working with cement, the pH is really high when is being mixed. This can cause a rash if you are in contact with it for long periods of time. The good news is that this rash can be prevented by washing with vinegar.

But again, as long as nothing toxic is mixed with it, no toxic fumes will be given off.
    No.
    Not at all!!
Cement doesn't give off fumes, just dust. The dust if it gets in your lungs can cause some problems.

Check out www.Behr or www. Cabot for their stains. They do have them for cement. They will give you information on application. You could always rely on the Home Improvement stores, like Lowes and Home Depot. HGTV.com can also give you some different looks.

Also try concretenetwork.comDoes anyone know any good books or websites on painting outdoor cement?
Well I saw something on HGTV that made me wish a had a cement patio so I could paint it. You can go to home depot or lowes and CEMENT PAINT. It comes in a few diffrent colors. The example they did was... They painted the flat cement slab with a brown color... and actually the took this stencil.. with alot of loops and stuff... looks fancy... and after the brown paint dried.. they had a smaller can of white. and painted the stencil on top of the brown... SO basically is an ';outdoor'; Rug that you never have to wash or move.. and they set thier paito set on top of that with some planters... it was soooo nice.. AND CHEAP!

There are many overlays that are designed for this effect. Call up a local concrete accessories dealer and ask about epoxies and ureathanes. They should be able to help you out. Don't use concrete paint, it will only last a few years and will create a maintenance item for you in the long run.Did anyone ever see a cement floor painted to look like ceramic tile s?
There are lots of things you can do with your cement floors, like staining them but this is pretty expensive and you need special tools to do this. Too make it look like ceramic tiles, I think your either talking about epoxies which is something very expensive and its a 2 part component where u need to really work fast. They have pot life which means when you mix your resin and cure together you only have like 3hrs to 6hrs depending on the weather , hotter it is it dries faster in the pot so you have to work really fast.
Hello. In my country New Zealand, you can hire a stencil from the paint shop. You could try asking your paint shop. It's dead easy to do.Just brush paint over the stencil, the stencil is shaped like ceramic tiles. If you use an acrylic paint you won't need an extra sealer.Failing that make a stencil out of heavy cardboard.
it is not real easy. you need stencils and expensive paint. Try Home depot but you will probably need Sherwin Williams

Once roof foam starts leaking you are in a very bad place.
No, you can't put roof cement over the spray foam because the cement will eat the foam. You can paint over the cement. You can put Isoboard over the foam, then cement the top of the Isoboard.

  • Alternatives to Blu-Tack, for poster on painted cement block wall?

I have a wall which is white-painted 'breeze blocks' (AKA cinder blocks, I think?) with no plaster or anything. I'm looking for a way to attach e.g. a poster to it, so that it can be removed at a later date, without leaving any permanent stains or damaging the wall.

I don't have the option of changing the wall in some way, as it doesn't belong to me [rented room]. I've heard that on brick, Blu-Tack is a big mistake, as it's impossible to get off. I'm guessing this applies to breeze blocks too - and I know Blu-Tack can stain or damage paint, as well.

Any ideas? Would Sellotape work, for instance?Alternatives to Blu-Tack, for poster on painted cement block wall?

Really good website that has ideas for different options to hang pictures and posters. I suggest the track system. It allows you to put one long track and then you just add the hanging wires onto that track. You can change your posters and pictures without having to put holes in the walls or put up that sticky tack and you can change the height of things so easily. Great system, I saw it on HGTV's ';Don't Sweat It'; and it looked amazing! Good Luck

    Can i paint cement?

i need to paint cement. either in the process of doing the cement or after when its dry? which way is the best? it has to be really durable, waterproof. Can i paint cement?
Paint intended for cement comes in two types--there are coatings which sit on the surface, and stains, which soak into the concrete somewhat. Stains are generally more durable than coatings for things like foot traffic and vehicles. Home Depot sells a brand that comes in many colors, is intermixable and is a water based epoxy that can be thinned and faux painted. You have to follow the preparation directions exactly for the stuff to work right. They also sell a clear topcoat which makes it more durable.

To mix color into the cement itself requires using pigments mixed into it at the time its being poured. The advantage here is that the color is in the concrete, not on it. It runs all the way through the slab. Can't wear or wash off. The color is not nearly so bright as paint and the choice is somewhat limited. It's also very difficult to make any variations in the color (to mimic natural stone for instance) but if you're willing to work your *** off you can do it. The best place to find it is to call a concrete supplier for sources. Or you can try to get the info from a company that does that sort of thing for pool decks and driveways, but they probably won't give up their secrets too willingly.

You don't say if this is a surface you're working with or an object, so it's hard to get too specific. Plain old enamel house paint holds up pretty well for things like garden statues and benches. It wears in time to a kind of weathered and aged patina that actually looks pretty good.

The main thing about any coating product you use is to etch the surface with muriatic acid. It cleans it and etches the surface to make it more receptive to a good bond. There are also bonding agents sold specifically to help the paint stick. (again Home Depot)

If you want to get really exotic, you can try to color it with a chemical/acid wash that essentially reacts with the salts within the cement and changes it to another color. It gives an effect not unlike the kind of rainbow effect of oil on water. It' difficult to find the materials, but the process is pretty straightforward--it is hazardous though. The fumes are toxic so it has to be done outdoors with the proper precautions. But as with the pigments in the mix, you're actually changing the color of the concrete, so it's permanent and weatherproof.

Hope any of this helps. Can i paint cement?
You can paint it. Hardware stores have paints for that, but it will come off with time. If you want it permanent, it will be not painting, but colored cement. Again, ask at a hardware store what pigments to add while making cement to get certain colors.
there are a number of concrete paints and finises availabe at paint stores and for order from speciality vendors (such as tennis court paints)...also scid stains for concrete and clear finishes....
After the new cement dries %26amp; hardens completely, give it a good wash with clean water and completely dry it. Under a day with bright sun %26amp; no wind, apply a few coats of any garage floor/brick/stucco/cement paint (preferably with epoxy base).
Sure can, just go to hardware store check the paints, should tell you on the label.........
Yes. Buy the paint that is used for basement floors. It doesn't come in very many colors but it seals the concrete well.
Is this near/around a pool or water source? Cement must be sealed, then painted. Go to B. Moore paints or Bear paints. Lowes Home center carries both I think. The paint for cement is a special blend that must be used. Can use paint sprayer.
David C is correct, also, if it is freshly poured or set, be sure to wait 28 days to allow the concrete to cure. otherwise you could potentially deal with some pretty serious problems.

How do you paint a marble look on a cement floor?

Start by painting your floor with a good paint made for cement or masonry. Lets say you want a gray marble. Paint the whole floor with a medium grey color. Then you will need a lighter gray a white and maybe a darker gray. Sponge the lighter colors on. You will want to do no more than a three foot square at a time. While the sponged on color is still wet spritz it lightly with water from a spray bottle. This will soften the look. If you get it to blended, hit it lightly with the sponged color again. When you get the look you want let it dry. Then with an artists liner brush go in and add a few veins in the darker gray. You want the veins to go in the same direction on a diagonal. slightly v your veining. You might want to practice on a piece of cardboard first. It really is a fairly easy project though. Don't be nervous about it as you can always add more color and blend until you are happy with the look. Have fun. Almost forgot. You will need to seal it with a good sealer once you are finished. You can just roll it on top after the floor is dry.How do you paint a marble look on a cement floor?
I agree with the first and second answers but instaed of spritzing with water , dip the tip of a long feather (think pheasent feather) in some paint thinner and then shake the excess off of it and then dip it in darker gray or white paint and slowly drag and while dragging twist %26amp;turn the feather at the same time-you may want to getx-tra feathers for the different colors of paint- the thinner stops the paints from sticking to fast to the base color. How do you paint a marble look on a cement floor?
I agree with the first answerer all except for making the lines. Use a sponge then soften the look by spritzin water on it. Use the edge of a feather to create the lines. It makes them look a lot more real than an artist brush.

You need to use a PH neutral cleaner like murphy's oil soap on a painted concrete floor.

Just use mild soapy water to clean. But I would repaint the entire floor, just to make sure that there wasn't any place water can get under the paint and create more chipping.. Best of luck.
If your floor is oil based paint use murphy's oil soap this will clean the surface w/out harming it. Be sure to use a soft cloth and not an abrasive any paint will chip if abrasives are used.

Yes, it can be used over wood flooring. However, using epoxy garage paint over wood will need 2 coats, one primer and one base coat. It should work. It is made for masonary use which includes concrete and cement. You may have a leak that is saurating the Dri-loc. Could also be a high humidity problem that is slowing the drying process.

You may want to take it to a detail shop and let them look at. if this is cement that you build things like sidewalks out of you may be able to take a plastic scraper and flake the cement off and the polish it out but if it is cement as in glue then try bug and tar remover or a adhesive remover from a paint supply place hard to tell you the best way without seeing it in person

Most boats absorb water and you will need to remove the old paint, allow it time to dry then seal, prime and paint.
If there's a Do-it- yourself yard in the area, they'll charge you a haul out fee (which includes putting it back in) and then daily storage. Many of them require that if you're painting the botom, that you use a paint supplied by them, for EPA reasons. A 48 foot boat should take you about 1 week to complete, or you can finish it in a weekend with 2-3 people working on it.

If you want the yard to do the whole job, it'll cost an average of $25 - $35 a linear foot. By doing it yourself, you can get as good a job, and save over $1000.
It's done buy the sg.foot of the bottom and has tobe taken out of the water and cleaned first, then primed, sealed, then bottom paint applied, then return to the water within 24 hours of painting.

Yes, all clear coats should seal, the only thing that may not is flat paint, and that would run off in the rain.

Hi, My cement pool has a ripped liner can you paint the pool with epoxy instead of replacing the liner? Thanx?

Drain your pool, let everything dry out, use any sort of vinyl with really good glue to patch it up. Don't use paint..thats like..unsanitary.Hi, My cement pool has a ripped liner can you paint the pool with epoxy instead of replacing the liner? Thanx?
You can buy special paint for this job. Can't remember whats its called.

    BUT

Cement contains different chemicals and these will leak into the water. Not a very big problem unless you have fish etc in the water.Hi, My cement pool has a ripped liner can you paint the pool with epoxy instead of replacing the liner? Thanx?
    I wouldn't recommend it
    I wouldn't....
yes, but it will probably still leak
    maybe

Is their a paint used for cement driveways that won't crack and peel?

If there is not already A paint on it .(plain grey concrete)

You can have the surface acid stained.

The stain penetrates the surface and actualy stains the concrete, it does result in A mottled or speckly type surface

but is A very popular option.

If you really want A painted look to the surface you can

have an epoxy coat put on - it does not chip or peel

and it has A solid color lookIs their a paint used for cement driveways that won't crack and peel?
All paint will eventually crack and peel.

  • Paint! Help! can anyone tell me how I can remove more than 50 yr old paint from cement?

ew, that's going to be no fun at all. scrub w/ thinner %26amp; wire brush, see if it'll come up. I've used diluted muriatic acid w/ a wire brush to clean up concrete, but not sure how well it'll take up old paint. If you have a pool you probably have some acid, give it a try.Paint! Help! can anyone tell me how I can remove more than 50 yr old paint from cement?
The only thing I am aware of to clean cement is muriatic acid

What kind of paint would you use for a cement wall mural?

You'll want to start off with a good industrial sealant, otherwise the paint will not weather very long.

If you use a good quality artists' grade acrylic (professional pigments will withstand UV light exposure longer, assuming the mural is outdoors) on top of a sealant, then the mural should last many years.

Be sure to use a good Aliphatic varnish (preferably with UV filters) when finished (aliphatic varnishes do not contain aromatic solvents %26amp; do not yellow).

Oils paint will also work, and to speed up drying you could use an alkyd medium mixed with the oils... in the end, acrylics will be easier to clean up (soap %26amp; water), faster drying and less expensive. What kind of paint would you use for a cement wall mural?
    I would just add, that:

since you can buy out door house paint that have UV inhibitors for fading, I would look to paint places like home depot for large areas of background colors. Artist acrylics are expensive and anywhere you can substitute out door house paint the better. Some of the 'oops '; cans which are really discounted because the people didn't like the color, might be an idea too. Look for artist acrylic paint in jars. Utrecht paint which is sold on line by the manufacture makes a very inexpensive acrylic paint with high viscosity. Liquitex makes a mural paint which is not so heavy bodied in large jars. Golden paints will be expensive. If you buy on line AWS will give you free shipping on orders over $200 and you won't pay tax if they have no store in your state. What kind of paint would you use for a cement wall mural?
I'd mix drylock with other color latexes about 50/50.

Can you paint of wax on a cement wall?

Like the outside of a house? Can you paint of wax on a cement wall?
Not easily no - It depends how large the area is and if its possible to remove as much as possible. A primer may work but it would be best to try on a small patch first.
